Coffin De Muerte “Coffin of the Dead”: Raspberry Cheese Danish with a Spooky Design

Introducing the Coffin De Muerte  “Coffin of the dead”– a hauntingly delicious flaky pastry designed for those with a penchant for the macabre and a sweet tooth to satisfy. This sinisterly delightful pastry is perfect for spooky women (and men) who enjoy creating eerie yet scrumptious treats.

Ingredients

Thawing the Pastry and Softening the Cream Cheese:

First take your frozen puff pastry and let it rest in the fridge on parchment paper to thaw. You want it pliable but not warm and sticky. It will take about 40 minutes for the dough to thaw if frozen.

Meanwhile, also set your cream cheese out at room temperature to soften, making it easier to work with later.

Preparing the Coffin Template:

Before we dive into the chillingly delicious details, let’s create our coffin template. You can download and print my exclusive template that keeps the preserves under wraps. However, if you prefer a hands-on approach, simply sketch a coffin design on a piece of paper (approximately 2 inches wide and 4 inches tall), cut it out, and you’re good to go.

Preparing the Sinisterly Sweet Filling:

It’s time to whip up the cream cheese filling! In a bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, vanilla extract, and powdered sugar. Blend them together using a mixer until they form a creamy concoction. Set this sinfully sweet filling aside for now.

Creating Your Coffin Shells:

Once the pastry is ready, lay it out on a slightly flour-dusted counter. If it cracks while unfolding, don’t be scared; just wet your finger and press it back together. Use your coffin template to cut out eight coffin shapes – four for the backs and four for the fronts. If you opted for a design, cut it out on only four of the coffin pieces.

Filling the Coffins:

On the backside of each coffin (the one without the design), spread a generous layer of the cream cheese filling, leaving a small space between the edge and the center. Now, take a small spoonful of the deep red raspberry preserves and spread it over the cream cheese. Finally, gently place one of the coffin pieces with a design on top.

Sealing the Coffins:

To seal the deal (and the pastries), take a fork and press it along the edges of each coffin. This will create a frightfully fantastic seal that will keep your filling from escaping during baking. Pop your pastries back into the freezer for 30 minutes to ensure the jam sets and won’t ooze out during baking.

Preheating the Oven:

While your pastries chill, preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s time to awaken these spooky delights!

Egg Wash and Baking:

As you approach the bewitching hour of baking, prepare an egg wash by whisking together one egg and a tablespoon of water. Retrieve your pastries from the freezer, and with a brush, coat the fronts of these coffin-shaped beauties with the egg wash. Now, they’re ready to rise from the dead in the oven.

The Resurrection:

Place your pastries in the preheated oven for 20-30 minutes, or until they transform into golden brown masterpieces. As they bake, your kitchen will be filled with the tantalizing aroma of raspberries and cream cheese, enticing even the spookiest of spirits.

Rest in Peace and Enjoy:

Once your Coffin de Muerte is done, allow them to rest in peace for about 10 minutes before indulging. Then, take a bite for joy and savor the combination of flaky pastry, creamy cheese, and the hauntingly sweet raspberry preserves – a taste that’s to die for!

With this recipe in your wicked repertoire, you’re sure to delight the spooky souls in your life this Halloween. So, go ahead and channel your inner witch or warlock, and bake up a batch of these eerie yet enchanting pastries.

Happy Haunting and Happy Baking!
